Word Box
This is the Word Box, also known as the Frayer Model. This is a graphic organizer that you can do at home with your child to help with their Vocabulary. It is quite simple. You create a box on a piece of paper, one that is like the image to the left, with the vocabulary word that you would like to work with in the middle circle. From that you may choose what you would like to put in the four different sectioned off boxes. Present in the example is in the top left box the definition of the word, the top right characteristics that your child knows about the word, bottom left real life examples that they think about when they hear that vocabulary word, followed up with the bottom right box with a picture of the word. This will help with your child's understanding of the vocabulary word and put visuals to the word!

Math Journals
Adding a Math Journal to your child's everyday process is not only a great way to incorporate their math lessons but to help improve their writing as well! You can make up templates on what you would like your child to write about their specific vocabulary. For instance, for the measurement unit you can give them some word problems to work out with a paper ruler (printable version link under the journal image) that you have placed in there to help with assistance. You could have them write about their day with using their math vocabulary with how they used them, if they saw the words through their travels. Or you can have them write about how they feel about their learning process with the vocabulary that they are learning in the classroom, if they understand it, what they need help with more, etc.. This could be a great tool to use at your home if you know your child is having difficulty with vocabulary, yet they don't share about their struggles or ask for more help. It gives you as a parent a great insight on how they understand the material that they are learning. |

Practice that feels like play!
Here is a website that your child can use on their own time to increase their vocab skills! On this website it is divided into grade levels and topics in which is learned in each grade level. They are able to pick what topic they would like to work with. It is a fun way for your child to see what they know and don't know about their math vocabulary by going through questions that are given to you. If the incorrect answer is given, it follows up with the correct answer so your child will be able to replace the incorrect answer with the correct answer! As your child works through questions and their knowledge of the topic increases, the level of difficulty of the questions will increase as well.
